What's Going on in Room 35?
October 19, 2016
Wow! I can't believe that it is almost the end of October! We have just finished our first reading and our first math unit. We took our first "brain checks" (tests) in both subjects. Grades for those will be coming home next week. Below is an update on our upcoming units and what we are working on science and social studies!!
Reading:
We are starting Unit 2. Our key learning for this unit is: Good readers use words and images to clarify and understand the authors message. Good writers use resources and tools to inform the reader and convey a message.
Word Study & Fluency: We will be working on our next 3 phonetic skills. These skills will help us to decode and read words with long vowels. We will also be talking about irregular verbs and past tense of irregular verbs.
Main Idea & Lesson/Moral: We will be working on determining the main idea of a non-fiction text. We are working on finding details to support the main idea. We will also be using details to help us determine the moral/lesson of fables and folktales.
Understanding Information: We will be looking at images in texts and in electronic texts to help us understand information.
Informative Writing: We will be researching insects and using what we learned to write a non-fiction piece.
Math:
In math, we are starting our unit on geometry. We will be working on identifying attributes of 2D and 3D shapes. Part of this unit will focus on attributes of rectangles. Students will be able to tell how rectangles are different from other quadrilaterals.
Science:
Wow! Our insects have really gone through lots of changes!! Our caterpillars have made their chrysalis, have emerged as butterflies, laid eggs, and those eggs have hatched!! We now have tiny baby caterpillars!! How exciting!! We get to watch the butterfly life cycle all over again!!! Many of our mealworms have turned into pupas. We are waiting anxiously to see what will emerge from the pupas! We have also been watching our milkweed bugs carefully. They are different than our other insects because they don't change. The babies are just smaller versions of the adult. We watch them molt and get bigger! Be on the look out in the next few weeks for our insect project coming home!
Social Studies:
We have been talking about government and leaders. We will be talking about elections and voting. We will hold a mock election and vote for either Clifford the Big Red Dog or Duck (Duck for President).
